Alice Crawford updated get_era5.py, which automates the retrieval of the ERA5 grib files for conversion to ARL format. The program now uses the new Climate Data Store Application Program Interface (CDS API). The ECMWF API will be phased out on February 28, 2019. get_era5_cds.py can be found at https://github.com/amcz/hysplit_metdata. The era52arl program in the HYSPLIT distribution, which converts the data so it can be used by HYSPLIT, was also updated to be more user friendly and take advantage of new functionality found in the CDS API.

A paper led by Nebila Lichiheb entitled “Implementation of the effect of urease inhibitor on ammonia emissions following urea-based fertilizer application at a Zea mays field in central Illinois: A study with the SURFATM-NH3 model” has been accepted for publication in Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. The paper is coauthored by LaToya Myles, Mark Heuer, and Michael Buban from ATDD; Erwan Personne from Agri Paris Tech; and Andrew Nelson, Sotiria Koloutsou-Vakakis, Mark Rood, Eva Joo, Jesse Miller, and Carl Bernacchi from the University of Illinois. It describes the integration of an operational parameterization of emission potentials in the SURFATM-NH3 model and explores the effect of urease inhibitor on ammonia volatilization.
