Radio Program On Atmospheric Warming Trends

August 22, 2004

The National Public Radio program Earth and Sky recently reported on research on global tropospheric temperature trends by Qiang Fu, Celeste Johanson, Steve Warren (all of University of Washington) and Dian Seidel (NOAA/ARL) in a three part series that aired August 4,5, and 6. The archived audio reports are no longer available, but you can learn more about Earth & Sky’s programs at: http://www.earthsky.org/this link opens in a new window

The reports were motivated by a study on “Contribution of Stratospheric Cooling to Satellite-Inferred Tropospheric Temperature Trends” published in the May 6, 2004 issue of Nature. The study finds greater tropospheric warming in microwave sounding unit observations than previously reported because of the effects of stratospheric cooling occurring at the same time.
