P-3 Aircraft Now Carrying The ARL BAT Probe

August 20, 2002

The NOAA P-3 N43RF aircraft is now carrying a Best Available Turbulence (BAT) probe, developed by Tim Crawford and his colleagues, and refined on the Long-EZ. The probe will enable measurement of turbulence and covariances, from which local turbulent fluxes can be computed. The data stream will permit measurement of the rate of transfer of heat, moisture, momentum, and carbon dioxide. Installation of the BAT probe (and of an ARL fast response, open path, infrared gas analyzer) took place during the week following Tim’s passing.
