MOU Signed with EPA

May 9, 2003

On Tuesday, 6 May, Governor Christie Whitman of the Environmental Protection Agency and Dr. Sam Bodman of the Department of Commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Air Quality Research. At the same time, an agreement to proceed with the development of air quality forecasts was signed.

The Department of Commerce home page heralded the event as follows:

“In a ceremony that took place Tuesday at the Department of Commerce, Commerce Department Deputy Secretary Sam Bodman and EPA Administrator Christie Whitman signed an agreement between the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcing a partnership to jointly develop a forecasting tool which will enhance the ability to predict air quality in our communities.”

The MOU on research has been developed slowly over the last several years, to underpin the long-standing (~50 years) but poorly documented relationship between EPA and NOAA/ARL at Research Triangle Park. Under the terms of the MOU, the collaboration between the two agencies will be expanded, and NOAA participation will be broadened.
