Morocco-Bound Smart Balloons

August 17, 2004

The actively-controlled “smart” balloons released from Long Island by ARL in support of the North East Air Quality Study have proved their worth. The most recent report is that one of the balloons tagging a parcel of air of strong interest disappeared out of radio contact in the vicinity of Morocco, after having been in the air for over a week. It is not yet clear what has failed – the balloon or its communications components. Aviation officials have been alerted. The balloon is small and is not an item of concern to them.
