Mercury Model Intercomparisons Completed

March 27, 2006

ARL has been involved in a number of formal and informal mercury modeling intercomparison exercises. An extensive international comparison of mercury models has been completed and has been presented in report form: https://www.arl.noaa.gov/wp_arl/wp-content/uploads//documents/reports/cohen/HM_intercomp_text_with_title.pdf. Also, the HYPSLIT-Hg near-field deposition results have been compared against the EPA’s Industrial Source Complex (ISC) model, and the two models gave very similar results. Finally, HYSPLIT-Hg results have been compared against CMAQ-Hg for estimates of the atmospheric deposition contribution of U.S. coal-fired power plants to the Great Lakes, again, with consistent findings. All three intercomparison activities are summarized in a recent presentation, available at: https://www.arl.noaa.gov/ss/transport/cohen.html#item40.
