Dr. Lester Machta, Founding Director of ARL

Dr. Lester Machta, founding Director of the Air Resources Laboratory, passed away on Friday, 31 August, 2001. Dr. Machta retired as Director of ARL in 1989, but remained active in the research operations of the laboratory until his death. His research work at ARL (and its predecessor, the Special Projects Branch of the National Weather Service) extended from 1947 until 2001. He will be sorely missed.
