ARL Employee Receives NASA Award

February 11, 2002

ARL’s Kirk Clawson, of the Field Research Division in Idaho Falls, has received NASA’s “Turning Goals into Reality” award for “outstanding contributions to the Aircraft Vortex Spacing System (AVOSS) Team; revolutionizing aviation by increasing capacity while maintaining a high degree of safety.” The award follows many years of research led by Clawson, on the generation of turbulent wakes by low flying aircraft tested using the ARL wake vortex visualization facility at the Idaho National Energy and Environment Laboratory. The facility has been employed for many years to quantify the intensity of wakes left behind different aircraft. The matter is of great current concern following a spate of recent aircraft accidents that have been attributed to encounters with wake vortices from other aircraft.
