What are the effects of selecting different trajectory starting heights?
Due to the large variations of wind speed and direction near the ground than at higher
altitudes, it is clear that the proper specification of the atmosphere's vertical
structure is essential for the accurate computation of boundary layer pollutant
transport. Small differences in the initial trajectory height can have a
significant effect on transport direction.
The example below shows trajectories started at different heights above
ground (500 m - red; 1500 m - blue; and 3000 m - black) and the results should be compared with the
previous cases. As noted earlier for the comparable trajectory ensemble result,
the lower level trajectories provide a more realistic horizontal distribution for a
pollutant plume transported within the boundary layer.
Multiple level trajectories.
