NGM Model Skew-T, Log-P Diagrams

A skew-t diagram (from the NGM data archive) near New York City on the 27th at 1800 UTC clearly shows a well mixed layer capped by an inversion at about 850 hPa (or 1500 m). However by the 28th at 1800 UTC, near Yarmouth, NS, the entire lower troposphere is weakly stable, drying out about 700 hPa, well above the pollutant plume. The modification to more stable conditions is in part a product of the transport over colder surface waters. The greater stability on the 28th suggests that vertical mixing will be weak.
