ARL NewsBritish Antarctic Survey Uses ARL Turbulence Probe on Twin OtterDr. Jeff French with the ARL Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division in Oak Ridge, TN, built an aircraft turbulence probe for Dr. Mario Masucci of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The installation has been deemed a success following 15 hours of test flights aboard the BAS Twin Otter aircraft. The probe was developed by the ARL Field Research Division in Idaho Falls, ID using an experimental class Rutan-designed LongEZ aircraft. Current plans call for installation of a similar turbulence probe on the NOAA Twin Otter N48RF. Aircraft turbulence measurements are crucial for the determination of areal deposition for various chemicals and for estimating the destructive power of high winds. Contact information: Richard S.
