What archived data can I use prior to the start of the FNL dataset?Our "reanalysis" dataset goes back to 1948. There is information about it at http://www.arl.noaa.gov/archives.php. You can ftp that data just as for the FNL. You can also choose the reanalysis data from the list of meterorology datasets through the READY web site at http://www.arl.noaa.gov/HYSPLIT.php and click the link for "Run HYSPLIT with archived data."
