With regard to the stability time series plots from the EDAS data, exactly what am I looking at? Are these model output fields (forecasts), or am I looking at the results from assimilated data?


The EDAS dataset (now called NDAS), produced by NOAA NCEP, is called the Eta (NAM) Data Assimilation System and is used to initialize the Eta (NAM) forecast model also run by NCEP. The EDAS assimilates radar, observations, aircraft information, etc and then produces a short 3 hour forecast. So, to answer your question, the plots are produced using both assimilated observations and short 3 hour forecasts by the Eta (NAM) model. More information can be found at:
